SARC hosts 'My Body My Life' self-defense class Published Jan. 29, 2014 By Senior Airman Frank Casciotta 71st Flying Training Wing Public Affairs VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- The Vance Sexual Assault Response Coordinator office hosted its seventh "My Body My Life" self-defense class, Jan. 21, at the Community Chapel Activity Center on base. The two-hour class centered on educating women about sexual assault and teaching self-defense techniques for fending off an attacker. "The things we learned were more effective than I expected," said Capt. Gaye Bobbitt, a 71st Medical Operations Group nurse. "I like how the classes are broken up into modules because it makes it easier to soak up all the information." This was Bobbitt's second time attending one of the classes. Classes are held once a month and include topics like awareness, empowerment, relationships, self-esteem and abuse, alcohol and drugs and violent rape and cyber cautions. "We would like to have two or three classes a month, but we need more instructors," said Tena Dominguez, the 71st Flying Training Wing sexual assault victim advocate. The best defense against sexual assault is education, said Dominguez. Seventy-five percent of percent of all Air Force sexual assaults are alcohol related. One in six women will be sexually assaulted in their life time and 80 percent will know their attacker. One sexual assault occurs every two minutes in America. Fifty-seven percent of rapes happen while on dates and 38 percent of the women raped are between the ages of 14 and 17. Those interested in taking a class, or becoming an instructor, should call the SARC office, 213-5597.
