Deadline approaching for Post 9/11 education benefits transfer Published July 23, 2013 VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- Airmen wanting to transfer Post 9/11 GI Bill education benefits to qualifying family members need to get it done by Aug. 1 to retain reduced service obligation options, said Master Sgt. Joseph Cumming, Air Force Personnel Center, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. After July 31, all active-duty Airmen will be required to serve a four-year active duty service commitment at the time they elect to transfer benefits to a family member. Airmen who were retirement eligible between Aug. 1, 2009, and Aug. 1, 2012, can serve shorter active-duty obligations, provided they complete the education benefits transfer process not later than July 31. The length of service obligations, listed in Department of Defense Instruction 1341.13, are: Those members eligible for retirement Aug. 1, 2009, have no additional service requirement. Those eligible for retirement after Aug. 1, 2009, and on or before Aug. 1, 2010, are required to serve one additional year. Those eligible for retirement after Aug. 1, 2010, and on or before Aug. 1, 2011, are required to serve two additional years. Those eligible for retirement after Aug. 1, 2011, and on or before Aug. 1, 2012, are required to serve three additional years.
