Deadline approaching for Post 9/11 education benefits transfer

Airmen wanting to transfer Post 9/11 GI Bill education benefits to qualifying family members need to get it done by Aug. 1 to retain reduced service obligation options, said Master Sgt. Joseph Cumming, Air Force Personnel Center, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas.

After July 31, all active-duty Airmen will be required to serve a four-year active duty service commitment at the time they elect to transfer benefits to a family member.

Airmen who were retirement eligible between Aug. 1, 2009, and Aug. 1, 2012, can serve shorter active-duty obligations, provided they complete the education benefits transfer process not later than July 31.

The length of service obligations, listed in Department of Defense Instruction 1341.13, are:
  • Those members eligible for retirement Aug. 1, 2009, have no additional service requirement.
  • Those eligible for retirement after Aug. 1, 2009, and on or before Aug. 1, 2010, are required to serve one additional year.
  • Those eligible for retirement after Aug. 1, 2010, and on or before Aug. 1, 2011, are required to serve two additional years.
  • Those eligible for retirement after Aug. 1, 2011, and on or before Aug. 1, 2012, are required to serve three additional years.
