The Vance Varsity Slow Pitch Softball team swept the Oklahoma Northwest District Amateur Softball Association tournament this past weekend in Enid.

"We claimed the title of Oklahoma Northwest District champions by winning four games and losing zero," said Capt. John Stock, the team's head coach.

A Vance team member, Capt. John Powers, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for batting .733 and exceptional play at shortstop.

The tournament win qualifies Vance for the Oklahoma ASA Men's B State tournament scheduled Aug. 2-4 at Kellet Softball Fields on Cleveland Street just north of the base.

Teams from all over the state will be coming to town. Although the brackets are not set, Vance will probably play early in the tournament, most likely Friday night.

"We'd love the support from the base to come out and watch," said Stock.

The Men's B State tournament will be a final tune up prior to the U.S. Sports Specialty Association Military World tournament scheduled for Aug. 15-18 in Panama City Beach, Fla.

"Last year we placed fifth out of more than 30 teams," said Stock. "This year we are expecting to perform well again in Florida."
